About Michael Klotz

Born in Rochester, NY, Michael Klotz has established an international reputation as a performer and pedagogue of the viola. He made his solo debut with the Rochester Philharmonic at the age of 17 and has since appeared worldwide as soloist with orchestra, recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral principal. Critics have praised his “big, dark, beautiful sound” and “stunning” solo playing, noting the depth of meaning and warmth he brings to every performance.

Since 2002, Michael has been violist of the Amernet String Quartet, touring and recording throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Romania, Colombia, Belgium, and Spain. His festival appearances have included Caramoor, ChamberFest Cleveland, Festival Mozaic, Sunflower, Martha’s Vineyard, and many others, collaborating with leading artists and principal players from major American and European orchestras.

A dedicated teacher, Michael serves as Teaching Professor and Artist-in-Residence at Florida International University in Miami, where he teaches viola and chamber music and mentors a select studio of gifted pre-college students. He is on the faculties of the Heifetz International Music Institute and the Josef Gingold Chamber Music Festival of Miami, and has given masterclasses at many of the world’s leading music schools. His former students have gone on to study at institutions such as the Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, Indiana University, and the Cleveland Institute of Music and are already shaping the next generation of the music world.
